Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
