Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
