The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
