Two Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Vessels Declared Missing following Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive search and rescue mission is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing boats transporting aid cargo en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Military Rescue Missions Initiated
Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were had on board no fewer than nine crew members, per a official statement.
The ships had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation
Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through repeated power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy commented.
The nine-person crew are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are working closely with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Previous Humanitarian Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.
That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, baby formula, bikes and provisions.
Wider Geopolitical Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation began.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from various officials highlighting the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.
Responding to certain comments, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that initial phases of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The Mexican navy said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
