Young Australian Faces Charges for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Artwork
A teenager from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by applying googly eyes to it.
Amelia Vanderhorst, aged 19, appeared remotely at the local court in the state of South Australia on Tuesday, facing with one count of damaging property.
In a statement at the moment of the recent event, the local council said that CCTV footage captured a person placing artificial eyes on the artwork, which locals have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.
The accused made no plea and informed the judge she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the judge advising her to find a lawyer before her next court date in December.
The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that repairs to the popular public artwork would be expensive as the stickers were impossible to be detached without damaging the sculpture.
“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those members of our society who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”
She added the council would seek the “substantial” repair costs from those accountable for the vandalism.
At the time the sculpture was first proposed, it drew mixed reactions from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance.
Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the artwork represents a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
